COLORADO LICENSE POINTS SYSTEM

In the State of Colorado, points are assessed against your driving privilege for the various types of moving violations. And depending on the circumstances, the State has the authority to suspend your license if you have accumulated too many points.

A driver may have his/her license suspended or denied if the driver has been convicted of traffic offenses resulting in the accumulation of:

  • Adults (21 and over) 12 or more points in 12 months or 18 points within 24 months.
  • Minors (18 to 21) 9 points or more in 12 months or 12 points within 24 months. 14 or more for the period of the license.
  • Minors (16 to 18) 6 or more points in 12 months or 7 or more points for the period of the license.

Each driver starts with a clean slate, or 0 points against their license. If a driver accumulates points against their license as shown in the table above, their driving privilege will be suspended, denied, or revoked.

Points accumulate when a driver is convicted of a traffic violation. Points will be eliminated from a driver record two years after the date of the violation. (Three years for minors 18 to 21).

HOW A TRAFFIC LAWYER CAN HELP YOU

Experienced Colorado Springs traffic lawyers help those who got into accidents or got cited for traffic tickets. They provide effective legal representation to beat traffic tickets on a routine basis. A Colorado Springs traffic lawyer law firm can also make sure that you get out of jail once you’ve paid your fines or got your speeding tickets dismissed. Speeding tickets can affect one’s license for years, and it’s not something you want to have to deal with in Colorado.

Colorado, like many other states, has a law called the Habitual Traffic violation offender Law.  This law can imposed upon those who demonstrate that their driving behaviors are threatening the security of others. If your actions indicate that you do not care about traffic regulations, and that you disregard traffic laws whenever possible, Colorado can revoke your driver’s license for up to five years. If you have received multiple citations in Colorado, it’s recommended that you contact a Colorado Springs traffic lawyer law firm in Colorado Springs CO 80903 for legal advice immediately.

In some instances, authorities will not be willing to simply let you go; especially if you’ve been found guilty of at least one previous traffic offense. However, there are ways to clear your name, reduce your fines, and even possibly get rid of the speeding ticket from your record completely. In the case of habitual traffic offenders, it is fairly common for some of these individuals to be given a second chance.

You may have to pay additional fines, go through a drug assessment or perhaps attend an anger management class, but the outcome of clearing your name may make all the initial trouble worthwhile in the end.
